For the first time this year at the Manchester Graduate Recruitment Fair on 17th June there was a zone for employers who wanted to target PhD graduates and researchers. This was quite a brave undertaking on behalf of the Fair organisers – launching a new section of the Careers Fair in the middle of a recession. Also historically many employers won’t just target researchers and tend to have a more generic approach to recruiting new staff. However, maybe in an ever-crowded job market, employers will be attracted to looking at those leaving Universities with a PhD. They can afford to pick and choose.
On the day, there were actually 11 employers present, which is good given fact that it was a first. Not all those present actually had specific vacancies on offer, but all were specifically interested in targeting researchers. There was quite a lot of good news for those of you from scientific, engineering and technical disciplines. There were a number of firms working in the nuclear and energy fields – so good news for those of you who have done a PhD around energy.
So who was there?
