The Browne Review and Postgraduates

I’m sure many of you will have been following the Browne Review into Higher Education funding and student finance (and all the related commentaries) with much interest, some of you may have even attended VC Martin Hall’s briefing last week on the proposed changes to Higher Education and what it means for the future of universities, and Salford in particular.

As we await Government decisions on the proposals it’s clear that we are facing some new territory and therefore new challenges in upcoming years. As you can imagine there has been great debate on what the changes will mean for widening participation, research, investment  and development, fees and graduate debt, competition from other education providers and fears of higher education only being afforded to the privileged few, thereby potentially widening the gap between institutions and limiting the choice of institution for students. The VC’s blog articulates all the possible implications in greater depth.

Whilst we can only speculate at this stage, it is worth keeping an eye on the news and what this may also mean for postgraduates. There is an interesting blog on this very topic published on the Postgraduate Toolbox website, which is aligned to Graduate Junction.

This is also a timely reminder for you to make the most of your time at Salford, seek out support that will aid your progression and help you better prepare for successful progression in or out of academia. Within Student Life we offer the Salford Student Life Award, which consolidates all your work experiences and employability related activities. The Careers and Employability Service offers 1-2-1 advice, careers workshops, filmed mock interviews, careers fairs, a jobs and volunteering website, employer presentations, e-guidance or guidance via Skype as well as Enterprise initiatives to name just a few.

Fiona and I will also be delivering career development workshops as part of the SPoRT programme. Why not also make time to visit Salford’s employee development pages or IT training programme to help you shore up any outstanding skills, this also highlights to employers your commitment to continued personal and professional development.
