Why should I use Social Media?

by Tahira Majothi on July 25, 2011

You know it’s been a while since I mentioned PG Futures 2011, this is one of the last posts on this topic I promise, I will stop going on about it :-). So quick recap, our one-day conference focused on Career Management in the Digital Age. Here are a couple of video clips from that day featuring two of our key note speakers, Jas Dhaliwal, Head of Communities for anti-virus and Internet security software company and Cameron Neylon, a Senior Biophysicist at the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Jas and Cameron are strong proponents of the benefits and opportunities provided by social media to effectively aid your research, develop your digital footprint and help your career by learning how to target your intended audience through the use of new technologies for optimal reach.

In these clips they answer the following:

  • What is social media
  • How has social media helped them in their individual careers
  • Tips on the effective use of social media
  • Social media etiquette
  • Why employers use social media and how it can help your career plans

We would love to hear your tips or experiences of using social media either for your research or to further your career. What social media platforms would you recommend and why?

On a final note, Cristina Costa and I will be running a joint training session on ‘Social Media for Newbies’ for University of Salford Postgraduates on Tuesday 9th August. If you would like to attend, please email me at
